| Studied for | Esophageal variceal bleeding; AIDS-related diarrhea; Acromegaly; Neuroendocrine tumors |
| Research use | Portal hypertension; Tumor suppression studies; GI fistulae |
| What has been shown | Controls variceal bleeding; Reduces portal pressure; Equivalent to other variceal treatments |
| How it works | Synthetic octapeptide somatostatin analog with cyclic structure via Cys-Cys disulfide bridge. Binds with high affinity to SST2 and SST5 receptors. Inhibits splanchnic blood flow, reduces portal pressure, inhibits GH release, and inhibits release of peptides from neuroendocrine tumors. Also antagonizes tachykinin NK1 receptors contributing to analgesic effects. |
